Welcome to WRIT 1133! Post your interview of your classmate here as a comment.

For your first blog post, please introduce the classmate you interviewed to the rest of us. Write a 250-350 profile that captures who he or she is, what he or she likes to do outside of class, and their experiences as a writer (and how they feel about writing). Pay particular attention to where he or she is from and the places that are important to them. Why are these places significant? How have they shaped the person you interviewed? What’s one striking memory he or she has about this place?

Whatever issues you focus on, take care with this short piece, for it is our first impression of you as a writer, as well as the first impression of the person you interviewed. Have fun with this piece—make it interesting! Use quotes, brief stories, and any other vivid details you can discover to enrich your profile of this person.

For example, if I were to interview myself and post the result, I might write something like:

Place matters to Professor Geoffrey Bateman, which is why his current research is so important to him.

"I think the different regions of our country shape us in important ways," he says. “As a teacher and scholar, I'm interested in studying the literature, rhetoric, and cultural history of places, especially the North American West."

Having grown up near Portland, Oregon, his interest in the West has evolved since childhood. He grew up exploring everything from the majestic Columbia River Gorge to the misty Oregon coast; he hiked parts of the Pacific Crest Trail and hung out in the quirky urban spaces of Portland and Seattle.

These experiences may help explain his current research on the queer frontier, which explores the sexual imaginary of the North American West near the end of the 19th century.

"It's a particularly rich period for sexuality studies,” he observes. "Sexual identity was not nearly as cut and dried as it became in the mid to late 20th century. And when you consider how race and gender influence our understanding of sexuality, you see an explosion of fascinating accounts—both literary and historical—that reframes our public understanding of desire.”

But his interests don’t lie solely in the past. Professor Bateman believes strongly that historical research must speak to contemporary issues, especially those that are politically charged.

“Literature and history offers us a way to rethink current problems, and for me, I think the most rewarding I can do historically is to show others how texts from the past allow us to re-imagine our lives today.”

Such engagement means that in his first-year writing courses, he tries to find meaningful ways for students to practice their writing. Ideally, he wants them to connect abstract rhetorical concepts and research methodologies with ideas and problems outside our university context.

“Ultimately,” he says, “I want students to feel confident that what they’re learning in my classroom not only prepares them for the rest of their time at DU, but also starts them on a much larger journey of being an engaged citizen for the rest of their lives.”

  1. Theron Guerra has been a life long Denver resident, so the decision to come to DU came naturally for him. It was the right choice for him because he already knew the city, and knew it was the right place for him. He enjoys living in the city, but also having the capability to go up to the mountains, and enjoy activities outside. Since he is interested in outdoor activities such as biking, snowboarding, and jet skiing, so it is a perfect location. He enjoys going up to various mountains whenever he can. His favorite location is Beaver Creek, but also likes other mountains. He also decided on DU because it is a perfect school for his major, which is accounting, but he also has a general interest in business as well. Another reason that Denver was a good choice for him was the fact that Denver has a good music scene, with lots of venues. The city is perfect to see concerts such as Jay Z, which he is seeing tonight. He enjoys listening to hip-hop, rap, and Latin music. Some of his other hobbies include chess and soccer. He played varsity soccer in high school as a center mid and forward. The best place he has ever been is Peru. He is Peruvian, and his family is from there. He loves to be in Peru because there is both the beach and the Andes Mountains, and is a very diverse location. Along with spending time with his family, he enjoys the Peruvian food too. He also likes Mexican food, and Italian food.

  2. Rachel Boheim is an ambitious 19-year-old from St. Louis, Missouri. She is currently deciding between criminology and HRTM for her major because she greatly enjoys both. In high school she enjoyed hanging out with her friends, but often felt that there was not enough to do. She sometimes ventured into the city, however she claims that there is not always enough to do in the city either. She has had major athletic success, exemplified by the 4 years she spent playing varsity tennis on her high school’s boy’s team. Since a girl’s tennis team was nonexistent at her school, she chose to play with the boys. In addition to tennis, Rachel also enjoys skiing, especially at Vail. She has enjoyed living so close to the mountains her in Denver. Her hobbies include shopping and participating in her sorority here at University of Denver. When not at school or in St. Louis, she enjoys visiting Costa Rica with her family. On these tropical vacations Rachel has the opportunity to zip line and wade in the ocean with stingrays. She has very fond memories of these vacations staying at the resorts her father’s company owns. After going through private school during her childhood, Rachel decided to attend University of Denver because it is a good school and she thought it would be interesting to live in Colorado. Unlike her older brother whom stayed close to home, Rachel decided it was best to leave her hometown in search of a place that had more activities to offer.

  3. Hello Ladies and gentlemen, here is a person you should meet. His name is Jon Havey. He is from Lakewood, Colorado and went to Mullen High School where he played soccer and ran track. Jon enjoys traveling and long walks on the beach. (Well not really). He is actually more of the mountain type that loves skiing and the outdoors. This guy has been everywhere from Ireland to the Alaskan Cruise. Not only does he like traveling but he loves all types of music especially U2 and loves watching the classics such as “A Wonderful Life,” “Lord of the Ring,” and “On the Waterfront.” Jon Havey seems likes the perfect person but sorry ladies he is taken by his girlfriend of six months Mackenzie. Jon being the courageous type he asked his girls in quite an interesting way, it was one in the morning and he said, “Alright I like you and you like me what are we gonna do about it.” And that is how he and his girlfriend got together. He loves taking his girlfriend to his favorite restaurant La Sandia because he loves the Mexican food since he is 30 percent Hispanic. But Jon does need to be careful because he is extremely allergic to peanuts but he will only have his Epi-pen with him.

Not only does Jon have a great life, he focuses his studies on Accounting and his other two possible minors of Film and Spanish. Jon decided to attend DU because it was a school close to home and he didn’t want to leave Colorado and his father works at the University teaching real state. Jon lives the life of traveling to interesting places and starting a great academic career.

  4. I was very surprised when I realized that I was connected to my fellow classmate and DU student, Michelle Nguyen, her boyfriend (Gordan Nytes) that I knew in elementary school. I have realized that the six degrees of separation rule actually does exist in some way, shape, or form and that it really is a small world. They have been dating for a little over a year and like to explore different restaurants (The Melting Pot being their favorite) in Colorado especially in her hometown Littleton. Before deciding to go to DU in order to stay close to her family and following in her older of her two sisters’ footsteps, she attended Dakota Ridge High School. She definitely lived the life of a high school student and was involved in many activities including playing three years of tennis and two years of cheerleading. After graduating from high school she is now majoring in Biology with a double minor in both psych and chemistry along with working at two jobs; the pharmacy at King Sooppers and the Chemistry Office on campus.
Yes she is a very busy person, but she is still able to find time to relax and have fun. She loves going to Florida once in awhile with her family to the condo they own. She really enjoys going to Disney World, but who doesn’t? She also loves shopping and just hanging out with friends all around Colorado. She says “I enjoy getting lost with my friends because it gives us time to just hangout and talk.” She finds fun in everything she does and just enjoys life.

  5. A Small Biography of Reggie Berg

How does a talented, 24-year old jazz musician end up in freshmen, spring quarter writing class? Reggie Berg found his passion for music as early as age six, when he began taking formal piano lessons. Reggie Berg has moved several places, including New York and Indiana, to find where he makes his music best. The Fort Wayne, Indiana native has found that Denver is where he likes to create and write his music. Because of his sporadic musical journey, Reggie Berg has enrolled in Writ 1133 “Writing the American West” at the University of Denver in order to fulfill his requirements. Not only does Reggie compose, write, and play both jazz and classical piano, but he also teaches lessons! On most days you will find Reggie devotedly practicing at the Lamont School of Music or over at “The Pioneer” restaurant enjoying margheritas with his friends and other music students. Although Reggie has lived in Denver now for four years, he still has not found time to learn how to ski or snowboard, but hopes to before graduation! Currently Reggie has four CDs, The Day Life Changed, Expressions, Reggie Berg, Live!, and Remembering Reggie. He is active in the Denver area as a performer and composer, and can be heard on vocalist David Gannon’s new CD, It’s about Time. Reggie has attended a total of four music schools, has performed in many creative endeavors, and worked with a variety of professional musicians including 14 time Grammy award winner, Bob Mintzer. Music has greatly influenced Reggie’s life since he was a young child. Music gives his life purpose and meaning. He especially enjoys creating and composing new pieces. Each piece is something he invented, something that came from his memories, thoughts, and emotions. Reggie will continue studying music at the University of Denver until future opportunities arise!

  6. Who is she? She is Tracey Farnes. Tracey is a karate chopping, kick boxing, music loving girl. Tracey is from Arvada, Colorado. She loves Colorado and doesn’t know if she will ever leave. Tracey loves Colorado because she can be outdoors all the time and loves going on hike and seeing concerts at Red Rocks. Being up in the mountains at a ranch or ski resort would be her favorite place to hang out. One thing that is amazing about Tracey is that she is a blackbelt and has been doing karate since she was nine years old. She loves karate because it always fun. She likes fighting and the contact. Tracey competes nationally which is spectacular. Also, she enjoys doing it because it is something no one really expects. Tracey loves music and she especially likes listening to rock and techno. She likes rock because the bands always so emotional and express their opinions on topics. Her favorite rock band is Rise against. Tracey likes techno because she loves to dance. She is going to the Coachella music festival this year which she is really looking forward to. Outside of class Tracey to hang out with friend and go to dance clubs like Beta and the Church. Tracey is not really big into going to movies but she does like to watch a movie every once in awhile. She likes Eurotrip, Moulin Rouge, and Pineapple Express just to name a few. In school, Tracey is majoring in International Business. She came to University of Denver because she wanted to stay in Colorado, it was close to home yet far enough to get away. Also, DU had an excellent program for her major. Overall Tracey is a smart and fun girl.

  7. Nineteen year old Sarah Page was born and raised in San Jose, California. Exposed to many different types of schooling, she attended private, public, and charter schools during her elementary and high school years. The most interesting experience out of these various educational formats was that she attended her charter school as it first started out and that it was held in an old Albertson’s building –something that interested me since, when early in my life I was growing up in southern California, my mom would take me to Albertson’s for our grocery shopping. All of these experiences helped contribute to her decision to attend DU. She wanted a smaller private school, which DU is considered, and as a bonus it was out of state. More on that later!
Another interesting fact about Sarah is her love of travel. Her favorite and most memorable place that she has visited is Singapore. She said that the culture was so different and interesting. While there, she got to swim with pink dolphins, which are native to Singapore.
She participated in ASB in high school. ASB was primarily focused on planning prom, other dances, and rallies for her school. She enjoyed this very much and was heavily involved in it. Taking part in ASB left little time left to participate in sports of any kind.
Some might wonder why a “Californian” would go out of state. But although she likes living in California and being close to the ocean, she doesn’t love it as much as some others might. Since she grew up with the ocean so close to her, it isn’t quite as special to her as to others. However, she did admit that one of the major bonuses of living by the ocean is that she can go wakeboarding, one of her favorite activities.

  8. Kathleen O’Connor is an artsy student from Chicago, Illinois. Although she is undeclared she really enjoys Psychology and creative projects such as music and ceramics. Kathleen explains that she does not want to, “Do what my parents do.” She is intrigued by all types of music including Hip-Hop, Rock, and Electronic music. Also, she is thinking of taking classes that involve the history of Hip-Hop and a class that talks about drugs and behavior. She is also fond of joining a Hip-Hop dance class that is currently being offered. Kathleen came to the University of Denver because of the weather and the fact that there is always something to do, “I like how sunny it is here, not like Chicago where it is always cold,” she explains. She enjoys the concerts that they show in Denver that feature electronic music such as Pretty Lights, “It [Pretty Lights] was amazing,” states Kathleen about attending pretty lights. Although she enjoys Denver because of all the great concerts, she also likes that she can get away from the city, “I just learned how to snowboard this year and I really enjoy it,” she says. Snowboarding is one of the main reasons that students from out of state come to Denver but it is only one of the reasons for Kathleen. She really enjoys the outdoors and the scenery here in Denver and how you can enjoy hiking, riding bicycles, and camping throughout Colorado. Besides those physical activities Kathleen was also a high school athlete, playing varsity soccer in high school. She played center midfielder at her high school in Chicago and hopes to get back into it. Her favorite food is Mexican food.

  9. Leah Keim hated DU when she visited during her spring break junior year in high school. Her mom actually made her apply! And when it finally came down to the crucial choice between the University of Denver and George Washington, she picked DU. She loved coming to school by herself, completely independent of the kids from her hometown of Fargo, North Dakota. Even though Fargo has a small town feel, Leah loves the huge city of Denver and all it has to offer. She particularly enjoys the constant concerts, weather the genre be country, pop or alternative (“anything but scream”).

She also loves Denver for its proximity to the Rocky Mountains. Despite not having a car at school, Leah has managed to snowboard every weekend this winter! Her favorite mountain to shred is good ‘ol Vail. She claims that she got hooked on snowboarding because her and her family used to go to the mountains every winter. “None of my friends at school skied, so going to the mountains was kinda my thing and my getaway,” she explains.

Leah plans on studying accounting. Yet, although accounting remains her stronger subject, she’s interested in becoming a lawyer. When Leah isn’t doing homework or studying, she’s probably watching Harry Potter, playing tennis, swimming, running or even cheerleading! Leah played multiple sports in high school while also rooting on her classmates through the school’s cheer squad.

Ever since the second grade, Leah and her family would stay at their lake house in Eunice, North Dakota for weekends at a time. Because her and her brother and sister grew up on the lake, she developed a passion for water sports. So, not only can this girl shred on the slope, but she’s perfected wakeboarding, tubing, waterskiing, you name it. This girl knows her sports!

  10. It’s really no surprise that 18 year old, Christine Ryan, misses the ocean. Having grown up in Los Angeles, Caliornia, there was always water nearby. Having moved to Denver, CO, there is not much opportunity for her to fill this void in her current surroundings. In an effort to remedy this longing, this past summer she traveled to Europe with two of her closest friends. Christine is Italian, so a great deal of time was spent getting acquainted with Southern Italy. Among the places they visited were Venice, Barcelona, and Spain. Her and her friends saw no reason to dish out the expenses of staying in hotels as they underwent their entire one-month vacation jumping from hostel to hostel. Her longing for water was nowhere in sight as she found herself smiling all summer!
Before Christine’s summer travels, she attended an All Girls Catholic High school on Belair and Sunset Boulevard (Los Angeles, CA). She humorously recalled that some of her friends came from such fortunate circumstances that before graduating, they were already driving their own BMW’s! While she enjoyed attending the school, she does not consider herself a devout Catholic. The school offered many good opportunities for her, as she was a point guard on the basketball team and ran the 100-meter and 200-meter races as a member of the track team. In comparing her experiences of residing in Los Angeles vs. Denver, she has enjoyed the people more in Denver. She feels that some of the L.A. citizens tended to be too superficial for her taste, but in Denver, people are all together more down to earth.
Now that Christine is a freshman at the University of Denver, she’s looking to explore her budding interest in art. She especially enjoys the work of modernist architect, Antonio Gaudi, and while architecture is one area of curiosity, she is even more inspired to try her hands at painting.

  11. Besides being an astounding person that you should get to know, who is Shelby Trueax? She grew up in Littleton, not too far from DU, and moved to Castle Rock at the age of ten. Her family seems to be a pretty well-grounded legacy at DU; her dad and grandpa both attended, and her mom went to the women’s college. One of the reasons she chose to attend DU was to “uphold the family tradition”. She has two other siblings in the clan, one older brother and one younger brother.
A talented athlete, she currently spends a lot of her time taking full advantage of Denver’s nearby mountains by snowboarding, hiking and backpacking, sometimes traversing 14ers or venturing out on week-long trips. She also wakeboards in the summer on Colorado lakes, and used to play all sorts of sports such as roller hockey, field hockey, soccer and tennis, although a total of eight concussions has hampered her athletic freedom since then. Shelby also is a sports fan as well as a competitor; she follows all the major Denver sports teams, no matter what they play.
She listens to a wide range of music, although it is admittedly, “mostly weird music”. Aside from having an extensive range of music, she’s also traveled quite broadly. Her family adopted her younger brother from Vietnam, and during the process went on a long trip all over East Asia. Her favorite places were Thailand, because it “was like a beautiful tropical oasis”, and Vietnam, because it was so foreign and such a culture shock. Somewhere she would love to go, however, is South America; namely, Patagonia, and Argentina. In order to fulfill one of her goals, mastering Spanish, she hopes to study abroad in Argentina, which would be a great challenge and adventure!

  12. Heather Roths brings warmth and sunshine from Arizona to our 1133 class! She likes Denver, yet she definitely loves the fact that Arizona is warm every day. During Spring Break, she spent her days sleeping in the sun. The decision to come to DU was “a leap of faith” for her, based on a dream she had around the time of May 1st, of her happy her, so she went for it. Throughout high school, Heather had a multitude of interests, including gymnastics, which she did for twelve years, and diving. She enjoyed diving because it consumed less of her time than gymnastics and she really enjoyed the completion. Her father and brother have always been golfers, and encouraged her to get into it with them, but she never really had interest in “sports where you swing things”. Instead, she loves being in and around water, and defines herself as a “beach person”. Thus, her motives for coming to Denver are pretty random, she says. She loves Colorado though, “because it’s so green, and there’s no dirt”. As for her interests currently, Heather mostly enjoys music. She says she likes “anything and everything” and she would gladly attend any concert. The same is true with food. Heather loves Mexican, and says she could eat sushi every day. She has done a good amount of traveling and one of her favorite places is Italy, where she has been twice, once staying with an Italian family. She loves the Italian culture and people. Another one of Heather’s favorite places to visit is Cornado Island off the coast of San Diego. She enjoys relaxing there and walking around the little town. “It’s only a six hour drive from Arizona”, she says, so she really enjoys taking trips there.

  13. Hayley Hoffman

For someone drawn to the mountains and change of seasons, the University of Denver was a great choice for Los Angeles native Hayley Hoffman. Coming to college not knowing anyone is scary for most people, but for her she like the thought of meeting many new people. However, having her brother attending Regis University made the transition to college easier for her. Although she is now in Denver, Hayley still loves where she is from. She describes Los Angeles as being “always pretty and nice” as well as conveniently located close to the beach. Hayley has a beach house that she considers her most important place to be; it’s where she is most comfortable. While she is there she likes to hang out with her two brothers, Spencer and Matthew, and her two cousins. They really enjoy participating in water sports and hanging out by the beach. Last summer she went to Africa with her family. She describes the trip as being “life changing” and has made a huge impact on her life. When she was there she traveled to various countries and stayed in camps that were set up. The best thing about her trip was the nice people and being able to see all of the stars. In Hayley’s free time she enjoys tennis, volleyball, skiing, and most of all attending concerts. Her favorite thing to do is go to concerts in smaller venues so you can “get to know the band.” Hayley Hoffman is someone who has had many exciting experiences and a wide variety of interests. She is pursuing a minor in one of her interests, art, and will hopefully be able to do something with it that in the future that she will thoroughly enjoy.

  15. Meet Logie Beck, a native from Boulder, Colorado. She loves Denver’s culture and laid-back atmosphere and is looking forward to pursuing her artistic talents within DU’s remarkable digital art program. With her prospective art degree, she hopes to become a. visual editor for a major magazine. A self-declared “compulsive doodler”, Logie enjoys drawing and cartooning. One summer, she studied sequential art at Pratt in New York and hopes to return someday. Along with her avid interest in art, Logie has quite the adventurous side; she has travelled to Patagonia where she went hiking for a week and has lived in Mexico for two years and speaks fluent Spanish. Logie used to practice Judo and enjoys athletics. She’s a Broncos fan and she also likes the Saints. She is one of four children in her family, being the older sister of three, ages 17, 16, and 11. She is close with her family and enjoys visiting home frequently (obviously… it’s Boulder) and spends her free time playing videogames. Although she lived in Mexico for two years and has done some serious travelling, Colorado is definitely Logie’s home and she loves the culture here. She is also quite fond of the music scene, listening to everything from pop to country, and is always open to hear new music. Logie Beck is friendly, smart, cultured, adventurous, talented and creative; definitely a well-rounded individual that will keep you on your toes!
