Exploring Sources for Our Next Assignment

Using the American West database available through Penrose Library, spend the next 15-20 minutes and explore the kinds of primary sources that are available within this database. Before the end of class, identify three sources that look interesting to you. Post their titles to our course blog and explain why they look interesting to you.

Before class on Monday, visit Penrose Library and find (at least) one book about the history of the American West that intrigues you. Check it out and bring it to class on Monday.

  1. Eight hundred miles in an ambulance...Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1889.
    - this describes the indian wars and what it was like to be involved in that. I don't know the peoples views who actually fought so this would be interesting.

Roughing It...by Mark Twain. Hartford, Connecticut: American Publishing Company, 1872.
    - This one sounds interesting because it gives an account of what it was like to travel during this time period and what kind of lifestyle it was.

To the people of Colorado. Synopsis of the Sand Creek Investigation. Denver, Colorado, June 1865.
    - murder and investigations sound very interesting to me and I like to read the stories that go along with that.

Under the black flag...A confederate solider, a guerrilla captain under the fearless leader Quantrell, and a border outlaw for seventeen years...

  2. Tracey and Michelle

    Source 1
Our Wild Indians: Thirty-three years' personal experience among the Red Men of the great west...Hartford: A. D. Worthington and Company, 1882. 1882 Graff 1114 Rare Book

We think that this looks interesting because it is an account of an American living with Native Americans. There would be access to a lot of topics concering Natve Americans from this source, such as disease, culture, and what happened to Americans that came into contact with Natives.

    Source 2
The Negro trail blazers of California; a compilation of records from the California archives in the Bancroft Library at the University of California, in Berkeley; and from the diaries, old papers and conversations of old pioneers in the State of California. It is a true record of facts, as they pertain to the history of the pioneer and present day Negroes of California, by Delilah L. Beasley.

This would be interesting because it describes African Americans in the west and how played a role in the American West, which is a topic we don't usually think about when considering the history of westward expasion and the American West in general.

    Source 3
High School Literary Society. Closing exercises. Friday evening, June 25, 1875. G. W. Gray, Printer, Omaha.

  3. The article "Gunmen, Outlaws, and Vigilantes of the Old West" by Professor Richard W. Slatta seems very interesting. It relates to the use of guns and violence in the American west, and its influence. It also discusses how this violence was portrayed and exemplified in art, film, and literature. The article talks about different types of outlaws/ vigilantes, and feature stories from Buffalo Bill and Calamity Jane.
Another article that seems intriguing is "Personal Experiences Among North American Indians" by William Parker. This is a journal by a man living with Indians and documenting his experiences. Some chapters that seem particularly interesting "The Santa Fe trail in the sixties", and "In the land of Hiawatha."
Another interesting essay is "Building an Urban West" by Carl Abbott. This essay discusses the struggle to conquer the west and form cities with the tensions going on between settlers and Native Americans. It explains the way the two groups struggle and the whites come to conquer and attempted to create "respectability" in the west.

These are all articles, documents, or essays regarding the idea of "manifest destiny." Manifest destiny was the 19th century belief that the United States had a mission to expand across the North American continent. The first article is the actual article on the Manifest Destiny written in 1839 by John L. O'Sullivan.
